Exploring nature on horseback – Itinerary 2

ElbatuttanaturaTHE ITINERARIES by ELBATUTTANATURA®

The excursion starts from the Uccellaia, near Marciana Marina, climbing back up the beautiful Val di Cappone, where the rich variety of vegetation includes the rare royal fern. After reaching Marciana Alta on a brief stretch of asphalt road, the path is taken to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Mountain, where riders and horses can rest and be refreshed. From here, the route continues to the “Semaforo”, the remains of a military lookout post used by the Navy to survey the waters between Corsica and Elba (it is said the Napoleon sent signals from here to communicate with the Corsicans). The route continues at a slow pace and in silence, following an ancient pathway made of large and cumbersome granite blocks, between which junipers, berries and rosemary grow during the early summer. The path descending towards Pomonte is then followed, which is also beautiful and scenic. The descent is very difficult, and at the end of it, both horses and riders, who will have had to do some of the descent on foot, will both need a rest.

After a break on the shores of the sea, the route goes back up Monte Capanne through the Val dei Mori, continuing on to Le Mura, a large pasture where there are two splendid stone goat pens: the effect is almost dreamlike. The itinerary then continues on towards Le Macinelle and then Monte Perone and Sant’Ilario, a medieval hamlet which should preferably be visited on horseback. Below Monte Perone, there is another pasture, which in the past used to produce all the straw for the horses on Elba. The last stretch is from Sant’Ilario round to Colle Reciso, then heading back to Marciana Marina.
